Giving yourself Grace with Procrastinating = Productive Outcome

How do you find the balance to give yourself a break if you haven’t been productive with something while also taking action to get stuff done?
Finding the delicate balance to give yourself grace if you haven’t been productive with something while trying to take action is very challenging.
It’s a fine line to not beat yourself up but also to hold yourself accountable. Recently I was coaching someone who is writing a book, and she had made tremendous progress but couldn’t get herself to write for a while. Sometimes those are the times when clients cancel their coaching sessions but it’s one of the best times to have a session. Our focus was on acknowledging the feelings of not making progress in a graceful and loving way AND then taking one small easily attainable step to continue with the process of progressing. We also discussed how being unproductive and procrastinating is part of every process when you are trying to achieve a certain goal. The client came to the next session having made considerable progress.
I saw a stat that said only 30 out of 1000 people finish writing a book once they have started writing it. Think how many people quit writing (or other things) when they go through the “normal” experience of being unproductive. Where can you give yourself a break and still move forward with a desired goal to get the productive outcome you want?
