In a landscape teeming with diverse coaching certifications and programs, selecting the right coach becomes paramount.
Embarking on my coaching journey was a leap into the unknown. Initially unfamiliar with the true essence of coaching, I found myself pondering its value, especially witnessing individuals charging substantial amounts for their coaching services. It was during my tenure at JobStreet by SEEK that the concept of coaching as a potential career path struck me. Amidst job frustrations, I began exploring alternative avenues, which led me to contemplate coaching more seriously.
Curiosity fueled my quest—I delved into online resources, sought insights from colleagues, and eventually committed to an ICF-accredited course. Fast forward to March 2023, and eight months later, I earned my Associate Certified Coach credential, with my sights set on attaining the Professional Certified Coach credential and beyond.
This coaching journey isn’t merely about acquiring titles; it’s an ongoing pursuit of mastery. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) instills a mindset that resonates deeply: our role as coaches isn’t to dispense advice, but to serve as thinking partners for our clients. It’s about unlocking their potential through creative thinking, a definition I often share with those new to coaching.
Within the coaching realm, there’s a plethora of individuals self-proclaiming as coaches. However, coaching emerged as a profession just three decades ago, and ICF, formed in 1995, established professional standards and certifications. ICF credential coaches invest substantially—time, resources, and energy—into honing their craft, creating a space where clients feel heard, understood, and guided toward their own solutions.
Mentored by master coaches like Janet, I’ve witnessed the magic of coaching sessions feeling like ordinary conversations. Yet, beneath the surface lies a toolbox of skills, allowing for transformative exchanges. This journey has exposed me to various frameworks, like Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centered Coaching and Gallup, each offering unique perspectives and insights.
The crux lies in the commitment—a lifelong dedication to ethical, skillful coaching. A coach isn’t a dispenser of directives; they’re a companion facilitating self-discovery. The key? Finding a coach with whom you connect on a deeper level, fosters an environment where you feel comfortable sharing anything. It’s within this connection that the true benefits of a coaching relationship emerge.
Coaching isn’t just a service; it’s a commitment to guiding others toward self-realization and empowerment. Invest wisely in a coach who embodies the right mindset, rigorous training, and ethical principles—a partner who doesn’t tell you what to do but empowers you to discover your own path.
