Slowed by indecision? Need direction toward a goal?
A roadmap with a good legend, compass and satellite navigation make travel a lot easier. In the real world of goal getting the territory is ever changing and forks in the road come often. The decisions and the choices we make daily can send us down multiple paths, condensing or adding time to the goal’s accomplishment. So when driving toward a goal how do you know when to go left or right, say yes or no, buy or wait? It can be confusing and even scary causing a lot of us to sit inactive in fear of choosing the wrong path. Here are 3 steps to help.
Step 1- Having a goal
This is a no brainier from some, however after accomplishing my first long term goal I realize the goal is the destination point in which you can use a simple decision model to make choices. Which is, is this action getting me closer to or further from my goal. Imagine driving a car with no final point of destination. Just driving and taking turns based on what each block holds, stopping on some blocks, passing some, really just enjoying a scenic drive. Great for a road trip adventure, however some of us live life like this. Ever heard the saying getting nowhere fast?
Relating this close to home, I think back to my freshman year of high school. After school a vast majority of my time was used at the recreation center working out, while some my friends did activities to have the most fun at that moment. After adding up four years of those minuet actions the path was clear what direction I was headed in contrast to others of similar goals and different after school activities. I knew working out was the action that would get me closer to my goal of playing collegiate sports, thus making the decision of what to after the school bell rung easy.
Step 2- Faith
Okay, you got the goal; however the, does this action get me closer to my goal model is too simplistic for some decisions we face. After deciding what to do the route toward a goal may appear hazardous and even illogical. The second step is to back up step 1 is faith. Faith by definition is the confidence or trust in a person or thing; belief that is not based on proof. This is a key element to goal getting. My personal opinion is faith in God’s abundance and love is the backbone to long term and true success. In the arena of goal getting faith in a person or thing can a lot of times suffice. This includes belief like the following, I really deserve or am worthy of this goal, you believe you are more that eligible for the achievement of that goal or you are just confident you can complete each small step toward the goal. The common factor is belief you or something external aiding you in the arrival of you objective. Sometimes the bridges we travel across are invisible and only available to the touch of action or not there at all forcing the crossing to be a miracle. A worthy goal will give you the strength to move forward when the terrain is tough and faith is the foundation to make the tough decisions toward a goal.
Step 3- Seek solutions not fixesWhen driving full speed toward a goal you will come across bumps, potholes and animals in the road. These are the obstacles that force you to temporally stop, plan and come up with a short-term plan to get back on track. It is very easy to take a turn to avoid these problems, turn around or stop completely never reaching the goal. When faced with a road blocking decision seek a solution that will not only get you back on track in the shortest amount of time, but also eliminate the problem from coming back. Here is an example from my personal life when I was in my mid-twenties I decided to take on a self-employed position in the finance industry. I started knowing I had a just few months to learn the position and get licensed before I would ran out of cash and would be strapped for bills. To my surprise (and lack of preparation) I failed the state exam not once or twice or even 3 times. I took the test 6 times before being able to pass and get my state license to conduct that area of my financial business. After the 4th failure I saw the end of my money coming soon and began to panic making test 5 a totally wash. I thought obviously I would have to put my goal on hold get a job and try again later. Using this model I knew that would give me temporary solutions and delay my goal. I decided to dig deeper into my self. I focused on my full belief that my license would provide the income I needed once I reached my goal of passing the state test. I didn’t get a job, I studied harder and with the help of a tutor passed the exam and received my state license. Taking the route got me to my goal faster and gave me the ability to eliminate the future financial worries in the same solution. Getting a job would have keep my from devoting my time to studying, placed more financial burdens as I would have had less time for little pay and most likely trapped me from returning back on track. I sought a solution not a quick fix.
Here is a recap
- Have a meaningful goal
- Believe you can accomplish it with your ability, or natural forces aiding you.
- Seek solutions not quick fixes
Please remember as you burn rubber on the road toward your goal, that the journey is just as important as the destination and most likely a miserable journey will only take you to an unfulfilling place.
