LIFE HACKS: Simplifying the boring tasks to get you back to the interesting stuff
ADHD can make already difficult and boring tasks even harder. And to top it off, doing things we don’t like can feel overwhelming and sometimes even impossible. The point of coaching isn’t to get you to “love” adulting tasks (very few people enjoy taking out the trash)… One of the main goals in ADHD Coaching is to simplify the annoying tasks so they feel easy enough to make them into a habit.
We’ve all got our reasons for why a task that neurotypicals seem to be able to do with their eyes closed feels near impossible for us. Whatever your reasons are, they are 100% valid and we will find a way to work around them. In ADHD Coaching, we’ll identify the “ughs” (annoying, boring, frustrating, difficult) part(s)of a task and find the best solutions to minimize the “ughs” and get you back to what you actually want to be doing.

Let’s use laundry as an example since it seems to be a universal “ugh”. While mainstream advice says to “just do it”, there are so many factors involved in getting us to actually finish a single load of laundry. Here are some of the things I constantly explore with my clients and their laundry woes: quantity of hampers, location of hampers (ie. one in bedroom, one in bathroom), type of hampers (lid or no lid? pre-separated or all together? stationary or moveable?), timing of habits (wash and fold on the same day or separate days? which day(s) are best for motivation?), how to make the task interesting (turn it into a game? race against the clock? watch your favorite tv show or movie while folding? pair it with your favorite drink?). Details matter! Each ADHDer has different needs and preferences that will make a huge difference in their laundry experience.
And guess what? We can apply the same investigative approach to finding solutions for almost any task. Hate cooking? We’ll hack it until it feels doable. Cleaning dishes give you the “ick”? You’re not the only one, I’ve got tips and tricks for that. Does meeting new people feel terrifying? We’ll explore ways to make it less scary.
