Being an entrepreneur and experiencing mental health difficulties are not uncommon. Increase your capacity by cultivating agency and gratitude.
Being an entrepreneur and experiencing mental health difficulties are more frequent as you think. Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health issues among entrepreneurs. Uncertainty, high lehel of stress, and constant changes can all contribute to this. What can you do to increase your capacity to have a better mental health?
Your ability to improve your mental health can be measured by two main factors: Agency and Gratitude. These are both capacities rather than skills. Imagine them as an already existing space around you that is there to be explored and experienced through awareness and practice.
Agency is the sense of control that you feel in your life, your capacity to influence your own thoughts and behavior, and have faith in your ability to handle a wide range of tasks and situations. Your sense of agency helps you to be psychologically stable, yet flexible in the face of conflict or change.
Gratitude is the act of recognizing and acknowledging the good things that happen resulting in a sense of appreciation. Gratitude is both a state and a trait. You can experience gratitude at a certain moment in time, and you can also experience gratitude more long-term as a positive character trait.
Increasing your sense of agency as an entrepreneur:
- Check and involve your intuition in your business
- Have a 100% accountability mindset: take ownership of your choices, and decisions.
- Cut overstimulation and set digital, mental and relationship boundaries with your co-workers/clients
Practicing gratitude as an entrepreneur:
- Sharing regularly with your co-founder/accountability partner what you feel grateful for at work/life
- Acknowledging what you’ve already achieved, making an inventory of what you’ve (funds, resources, success stories, IP)
