Know the Difference Between Social Media and SEO

Looking to market on the web? Feeling overwhelmed? Say 'no' to social media (Twitter, Facebook, & others) and say 'yes' to SEO (Google, Bing).
If you are considering marketing on the web versus marketing in the real world, don’t let social media cloud your decision making. Social media networking is not SEO marketing. They are not to be confused or blended into one. SEO marketing need not involve Twitter and Facebook, it involves Google.
1. Social Media is instantly gratifying; not enduring
When you consider Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, they are all focused on delivering current information. That means that you can create instant buzz and reach a wide audience quickly.
The down-side is that it’s like a faucet. If you are at your computer engaging in conversation with people, the faucet is on. When you go away for a weekend or more the faucet is off. Yes, there is some retained capital in your time invested (i.e. the number of followers you have), but in general, no new leads will come your way when you are not actively engaging your audience.
The other down-side of social media, in my own opinion, is that it is exhausting and can be really overwhelming (but that’s a topic for another article).
2. SEO marketing takes time but offers long-term success
Rather than focusing on conversation, SEO (search engine optimization) is about delivering quality content and information on narrow topics of interest that will be relevant today as well as months and even years from now. The goal with SEO marketing is to write an article or piece of information that people will find useful. Most often the content helps solve some sort of pain or problem in life.
For coaches, this means writing about topics such as “save my marriage”, “communicating with my kids”, or “conflict in the office”. Google, who has captured over 75% of the web search market strives to deliver quality, proven content to its customers over and over again. And their complex algorithm for search gives preference to content that has developed a solid reputation (primarily via inbound links).
Once Google recognizes you as an expert for a particular topic and one that readers enjoy visiting, you can count on a steady stream of traffic – even while you sleep.
It takes time, discipline (partly to stay away from time-consuming social media – chuckle chuckle) and a little know-how to get to the top of the search engine results but when you do, the pay off can be immense.
