Unleash unwavering confidence: 3S + 2P formula. Embrace self-awareness, acceptance, efficacy, positive talk, and visualization to build confidence
One day, a client approached me with a question, “Justin, I’m not sure if I’m qualified for the role of a manager, but I’m really interested to be one. Can you assist me?”
At times, our skills and knowledge are overshadowed by self-doubt and fear, hindering our progress in life. As Shakespeare aptly noted, “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”
However, this encounter led me to ponder if there exists a hack to conquer self-doubt and cultivate unwavering confidence. Countless resources are available, from Amy Cuddy advocating the power pose technique to boost confidence, to Tony Robbins stressing the mastery of one’s current state.
For those who prefer a straightforward approach to unshakable confidence, here’s a concise formula: 3S + 2P = Confidence.
All me to explain further:
Self-awareness serves as the foundation. Understanding one’s thoughts, emotions, strengths, and areas for improvement is essential for maintaining healthy self-confidence. Recognizing that you are not defined by your thoughts or habits, but rather a spiritual being experiencing humanity, liberates you from self-judgment. This realization empowers you to change at any given moment. Mindfulness and journaling are two powerful habits to enhance self-awareness.
Self-acceptance entails embracing oneself wholly. It involves embracing strengths, weaknesses, mistakes, regrets, failures, and responsibilities. Often, we selectively accept certain aspects of ourselves, avoiding acknowledging difficult feelings. Self-acceptance is a cornerstone of robust self-confidence. Valuing oneself despite imperfections nurtures positive self-esteem. Practicing self-compassion is an effective means to boost self-acceptance. Treat yourself with the kindness and understanding you’d offer to a close friend, especially when facing challenges or mistakes.
Self-efficacy refers to the belief in one’s capability to accomplish tasks and achieve goals. Fostering this belief is pivotal in building confidence. It’s constructed through past successes, continuous learning, and setting attainable objectives. Constructing a “success list” serves as a visual reminder to bolster confidence. Cultivating self-efficacy involves setting daily goals aligned with your broader yearly objectives.
Positive Self-Talk, Our internal dialogue greatly impacts confidence. Transforming self-criticism and negative thoughts into supportive and constructive statements is the essence of positive self-talk. This shift is challenging but vital. Train your inner voice to become your greatest supporter. An African proverb wisely states, “When there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do you no harm.” Practicing gratitude is a practical way to develop positive self-talk. When caught in a downward spiral, ask yourself what you can be grateful for in the present moment.
Positive Visualization, Harnessing the power of imagination is crucial. Often, we unwittingly direct our imagination toward negative outcomes, fueling anxiety. Instead, focus on using imagination to envision success. Visualizing triumphant results and imagining oneself achieving goals boosts self-confidence. This technique creates a positive mental image of success, increasing its likelihood.
To implement this formula, follow these steps:
1. Begin self-awareness by practicing mindfulness and journaling to understand your thoughts and emotions better. The mindfulness practice can be implemented by just doing one thing at a time and stop “multitasking”.
2. Embrace self-acceptance by valuing your strengths and weaknesses, and treating yourself with self-compassion by being your own best friend.
3. Foster self-efficacy by setting daily goals aligned with your yearly objectives. I call this the 5 by 5. Complete 5 goals by 5 pm.
4. Cultivate positive self-talk by redirecting your focus with gratitude and constructive affirmations. The easiest way to do this is to start asking a better question.
5. Harness positive visualization by imagining successful outcomes and envisioning how you’ll overcome challenges this will fuel you with self-confidence and a belief you need to execute.
