Coaching vs. Therapy

Why Coaching and NOT Therapy?
Coaching vs. Therapy
More than anything else, with a MSW, people ask me, Why coaching rather than therapy? My response is simple. I believe in my heart and soul that each individual has all the tools they need to solve their own challenges. I believe that people need to be cheered on and asked questions in a kind but critical manner to allow them to come to the appropriate answer for themselves.
You see, therapy, and life in general seems to put value on relying on others to “solve” your problem. Whether that is in the form of a book, a pill, a therapy session, and on and on, it all looks the same. Here is my problem Mr., Ms. or Mrs. professional in this segment of life; please just tell me what to do. The issue is that if we don’t come to terms with what we need to do for ourselves to solve our own problems we don’t take ownership. If we fail then it’s someone else’s fault because we just did what the professional told us to do.
There is an accountability factor in coaching that leads to greater success. There is an ownership in coaching clients that makes them far more invested in the outcome. There is the unwavering support of the coach that always says YOU can do it! YOU have the tools! YOU have the know how! YOU are the expert on your own challenges!
Cheers!
