What do you want to be when you grow up?

Who we want to be when we grow up is a much bigger question - often still unanswered in midlife - with higher stakes, than it was when we were young.
My 9yr old daughter was talking in the car yesterday about jobs she might have one day. But I didn’t ask her ‘what she wants to be when she grows up.’
From my training in psychology I know that’s an outdated, unimaginative, fixed mindset type of question to ask kids.
So instead I said to her “Do you know how I help adults find out what career they want? I ask them three questions. And when parts of the answers to those questions overlap, that’s where we look for what their career might be!”
“Would you like to know those three questions?” She nodded.
So I shared them with her, and I’ll share them here with you today too;
1) What excites you? (identify your interests)
2) What are you good at? (identify your skills)
3) What do you think the world needs? (identify areas of opportunity)
From this place of curiosity and self discovery, we can start to identify roles that align with our skills (strengths, talents, knowledge, abilities) , our interests (passions, hobbies, motivating desires), and the external opportunities that we see in the world around us.
Once we have that venn diagram of skills, interests, and opportunity, and the roles that may be at the centre of commonalities, that we can create a roadmap and strategy to explore each role, its viability, and its current level of opportunity.
……..
You are unique and you have something unique to contribute to the world.
What’s your area of destiny gonna be? Let’s discover it together in coaching!
