The Magical Power Of A Post-it

Food for thought for anyone struggling to uphold their commitments to themselves.
I found myself standing in front of the TV wearing 4-yr-old tie-dye sweatpants from Target, adorned with remnants of yesterday’s coffee & hot sauce, holding the remote & pleading to the universe to PLEASE let me suddenly come down with the flu or a case of diarrhea…
Food for thought for anyone struggling to uphold their commitments to themselves.
Some background.
I recently discovered that someone snuck into my closet and replaced all of my pants with pairs that were one size smaller.
Given that I have committed to wearing pants in 2023 AND that I have also committed to breathing while wearing them, I’ve decided that I need to pay a little more attention to my diet and kick up my workout routine a notch- replacing my daily lower intensity activities with a particular 60 day – 30 min interval training routine that you may have also seen advertised at 2 am while eating red-hot Cheetos.
This is how I found myself on day 5 of 60 – begging for an intervention.
Finger over the play button, my brain popped its favorite question…
“Does this even matter?”
After all, I had been doing this activity for FOUR WHOLE days already and my pants weren’t one smidge looser.
I had just worked a 12 hour shift in the ED and was scheduled to return in less than 2 hours.
“Is it even worth it?”
Unconvinced, I washed the water bottles in the sink.
I checked Waze.
I put a load of laundry in.
I contemplated the consequences of missing one day.
Does one workout even matter in the grand scheme of things?
Nope, not really.
Is it justified for me to miss given that I worked all day yesterday and have another jam packed day about to begin?
Yep.
But then I remembered that sticky note that I have permanently affixed to my bathroom mirror.
The one that I wrote when I realized that at some point my life had become a stream of unending exceptions and emergencies.
“Will this action, if applied consistently and according to plan lead to greatness?”
The make or break things in life that determine success are HARDLY EVER comprised of ONE ACTION.
GREATNESS IS DELIBERATE – achieved in the daily grind.
A series of boring, seemingly inconsequential actions that lead to:
Getting promoted
Building wealth
Maintaining successful relationships
Establishing trust
Losing weight
I did the workout, and I feel great about it.
I’d love to challenge you to write your own sticky note to employ in the face of boredom or fatigue.
I would love to hear if this works for you too.
