Increase in global competitiveness has resulted in increased corporate attention towards organizational effectiveness rather than job satisfaction and quality of life (Lawler, 1994). It was however, not too late that the corporate sector realized that organizational effectiveness can only be achieved through motivated employees. Motivation is a relative phenomenon which requires individual behaviour understanding as well as circumstantial or environmental situations under which a person behaves or operates. This essay attempts to define motivation within the contextual framework of its environmental settings and discuss briefly the implication of motivation in different spheres of an organization such as organizational structure, human resource management and organizational politics.
