The strengths and limitations of using cognitive theory in explaining this kind of learning as opposed to alternative approaches
The learning process is a persisting change in human performance or performance potential that is being brought about as a result of the learner’s interaction with the environment (Illeris,2003). The theories of learning including cognitive theory of learning, and other alternative approaches such as behaviouralism, social learning theory and humanism help to understand the learning process and increase the effectiveness of the overall learning process (Kozlowski & Salas, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to choose a learning activity (training program on safe driving) and use cognitive learning theory to explain what is involved in learning in this activity. The paper will outline the strengths and limitations of using cognitive theory in explaining this kind of learning as opposed to alternative approaches such as behaviourism, social learning theory and humanism using the literature on theories of learning.
