Father's Day

Father's Day, Gratitude, Love, Appreciation,
“Tu no has sido adulto, pero yo si fui niño y adulto.” You have not been an adult, but I have already been a child and adult — that’s what my father would often tell me when I was a kid, too arrogant or prideful to recognize my mistakes. On Father’s Day, these wise and inspiring words remind me about humility and accepting not only my flaws and limitations but other’s as well.
Thankfully, I am blessed to still have my father alive and healthy as he pushes 80. In retrospect, I can’t say my father was absent in my life, but rather it was me who was absent. During those chaotic teenage years, I hated the thought of going on camping or fishing trips with my dad because in my mind I did not want to be associated with him for no other reason than being an ingrate. Years later, I would realize that being a father is not a “one-size-fits-all” model.
I consider my father a hero because, although he may not speak much about his feelings, he has shown his love through his actions. Each day, I can only aspire and challenge myself to persevere and be a dynamic father to my yet-to-be-born children.
Not too long ago we had a conversation about what kind of a father I would be. Despite some disagreements about how to raise a child, and after seeing the sacrifices made and the dedication that my father and brother have for their children, I see fatherhood and parenthood in general as one of the most difficult but, rewarding life callings a person can experience.
Today, I am grateful and appreciate all the time, sacrifice, money, but most importantly love that my dad has shown me. I do not even think I could ever repay his love — at least not in this lifetime. Whether you are a father, currently have one, your father has passed away, or if you consider a non-biological person, teacher, friend, or mentor as your father, happy Father’s Day! ¡Feliz día del padre!
