Leadership True North

Being brutally honest to yourself about your impact on the people around you will guide you to conscious leadership
In order to move from management to leadership, I would like to offer that the following 3 questions should be the reference points. In my own, Master Mariner maritime jargon, the “True North”, for every conscious leader:
1. How do others experience me – and how do they experience themselves in my presence?
Answering this question for yourself will help you get a feel and connection with the atmosphere and micro climate you are creating around you: is it open, to be challenged, vulnerable – or closed, directive, imposing.
2. What price will you make others pay for your own success / good?
On occasions, when we don’t work on creating win-win situations, what tradeoff and suffering are you willing to accept? Your tolerance for other people’s potential suffering will inform you, how much of a participative leader you are.
3. What role do I play in the underperformance of others?
An uncomfortable question, but instead of blaming others on occasions of low or no delivery, ask yourself how you may have contributed to that undesired outcome.
In essence, I am convinced that if you as a leader haven’t gotten outside your comfort zone in the last 12 months (…), you have no moral authority to request from those, who you have the privilege to lead, to seek opportunities outside their own comfort zones. And for me, this includes the honest and candid answering of these 3 questions. To build self respect and true confidence, because you are in touch with your own, innermost values.
