We all need the right space for growth, especially when it comes to getting from where you are now to where you want to be.
We all need the right space for growth, especially when it comes to getting from where you are now to where you want to be. Whether your goal is to navigate a life transition, find fulfillment in a career, improve your wellbeing, or be more confident, it can be hard to know how to get started. Life coaching can get you from where you are now to where you want to be.
Life coaches help you clarify your values, set goals, make conscious choices, and gain momentum toward reaching your goals. You’ll draw on your unique strengths, talents, and inner wisdom, get rid of the obstacles holding you back, accomplish more of what matters to you and grow from the experience. A coach will provide support and hold you accountable, which will help you accomplish your goals more quickly and efficiently than if you were working on your own. The process of discovery, learning, action, and empowerment will create long-lasting change.
Coaching is different from therapy. Therapy is about healing from the past; coaching meets you where you are now – the present – and focuses on the future. Coaching is short-term, goal- and action-oriented. If you want to work on a specific thing, like gaining a new perspective, improving life satisfaction, or accomplishing a goal, life coaching can help. If you’re looking for longer-term care for mental health issues, seek a therapist.
If you’re thinking about life coaching, here are seven benefits to keep in mind:
1. Better self-confidence. A study by the IFC reported that 80% of people who hired a life coach reported improved self-confidence.
2. A growth mindset. A benefit to coaching is a shift in perspective. With coaching, you can expand and nurture your growth mindset.
3. Improved self-awareness. Research found that only 10-15% of people studied were self-aware, despite people believing that they are self-aware. But with coaching, you have a guide to reflect on your progress and your levels of self-awareness. Coaching can help you build your self-awareness muscle and ultimately, gain more confidence in knowing who you are.
4. Improved relationships and communication skills. According to the Institute of Coaching, your relationships will benefit from coaching. One study found that of those who participated in coaching, over 70% benefited from improved work performance, relationships, and effective communication skills.
5. Better clarity and purpose. Data has shown that folks who take part in coaching report a higher sense of purpose and meaning.
6. Improved overall well-being. Coaching can also help improve your overall well-being. Data also shows that a majority of people who start coaching in a “stuck” period get better. In fact, 77% will significantly improve their well-being state in three to four months with personalized support.
7. Lower stress levels (and better resiliency). The same data cited above shows that a benefit of coaching is lowered stress levels and better resiliency.
Select a coach that you feel connected to, someone you have rapport with. It’s best practice to have the opportunity to talk with a coach prior to making any decision to see if you have chemistry. The right coach will be someone you feel comfortable with and inspired by but also someone who challenges you, which may make you feel a little nervous or excited. Trust your intuition. The foundation of a good coaching relationship is trust and authenticity. This allows for vulnerability and growth.
