Are You Addicted to Your Negative Thoughts?

How your thoughts relate to health and addictions
Are you aware that your thoughts are creating the world around you? That your thoughts can actually perpetuate your addictions or cravings? We often forget how our own language to ourselves can be either the most beneficial or detrimental part of our lives. Our thoughts, in fact, define who we are, what we become, and what we will attract in our lives. Both good and bad. For many years I have studied personal growth and spirituality, always on a quest to know more, and to be the best person I can be. Every book from the Bible to the latest self-help book, essentially says the same things. Our thoughts create our world. Our thoughts lead to beliefs, which lead to actions, which lead to the end result of our circumstances. These principles and teachings have been around for centuries yet we still lose sight of our own unique power in our busy industrialized world. Why is that? Are we just too distracted by all the commotion around us? Or have we been programmed to ignore these universal truths through media and advertising? I think that both can be true, but the bottom line is we still get to choose. The amazing thing about being a human being is that we have free will and we have choice! We get to choose what our thoughts are. No one else has that power over us. We are responsible for our own destiny. So my question for you today, is are your thoughts helping you recover or are they focusing on your addiction?
I see so much blame and lack of responsibility in recovery sometimes. It is so easy to blame a disease, genetics, environment, etc, on why or how we became addicts. The truth is, we decided at some point to put drugs or alcohol in our bodies, and we also decided to continue doing it over and over again. I am not saying that there aren’t certain individuals who are more prone to this type of behavior, there definitely are, but that person still must make a choice. Each moment of the day we are thinking thousands of thoughts, in fact, it is suggested that the human mind has more than 65,000 thoughts a day!! That is a lot of thoughts floating around our heads. Some are good, some are bad, and some are meaningless. The magic of the human brain is that, it can be reprogrammed, and conditioned to think either negative thoughts or positive ones. It is much like a computer system that constantly needs to be updated and checked for viruses. Most of us check our computer for viruses more than we check our own brains. Having an addiction is like have a virus of the mind. It takes over our regular programing and instead installs negative and self-defeating behaviors. The substance becomes the controller of our minds telling us lies about who we are, what we are worth, and the behaviors we should have. So, if we want to kill off this virus of the mind, then we must make an effort to change our thoughts, cleanse out the viruses, and replace them with new positive thoughts, believes, and habits. This can be done by making the choice to start monitoring your thoughts. What are you telling your self all day long? Are you saying you are an addict over and over again to yourself? Or are you saying things like, ‘thank you for my healing’, and I am so grateful for my wellbeing today? All these thoughts add up and they make a huge difference in our lives. By controlling our thoughts we begin to take 100% responsibility for our lives and our addictions.
When I see private clients in my office it is a guarantee that people will sit down and tell me all the bad stuff in their lives, all the things they hate, and all the things they want to fix. I then usually have to ask them what they like about their lives or what they are grateful for. They often get a confused look on their faces before they answer the question, and then the conversation will turn around. As humans we tend to focus on the negative, no matter what the situation. We notice our flaws, others flaws, and how things could always be better or different. It is the never ending cycle of the, ‘the grass is always greener’ epidemic of human nature. But, what if we took a different approach, especially in recovery? What if we were so grateful for our addictions that they led us down a path to find true peace and health? What if we chose everyday to only focus on the good in our lives, instead of the bad? How would that change what we attracted? How would it changed the way you feel right now in this moment? I bet it would change a lot!
Although it is one of the hardest things to do, I challenge all of us this week to really monitor our thoughts, see what we are thinking about all day, and how we can change our stinkin thinkin. At first it will seem tiresome and hard, but after a while of monitoring your thoughts and changing all the negatives into positives, it will become a fun game that makes you feel better about life. Some days it will be easier than others, but the results will amaze you. In fact, your life will change completely because you will start to attract better things, people, circumstances, and opportunities. If your thoughts change, then your life will change. That is just the truth of the matter. The best part is we now know through studies like quantum physics that this is absolutely 100% accurate and true. Scientists have studied the power of positive and negative brain waves and how they affect our bodies and our health. The good news is that a positive thought is much more powerful than a negative one in terms of vibrational energy. So choosing positive thoughts, although it may seem hard at first, will get you to where you want to be so much faster!
Instead of focusing on addiction and disease, focus on health and joy. Instead of focusing on debt and lack of money, focus on abundance and wealth. For things to change in your life, you first have to change. The biggest change that will ever take place in your life is the changing of your thoughts. So now you know the truth as well, and you can take this with you on your road to recovery and sobriety. Thoughts become things, so choose them carefully!
