What I Wish Everyone Knew About Communication

Communication is the backbone and lifeblood of all healthy relationships - romantic, platonic, or familial.
What exactly is communication? We all use it every day, whether it’s verbal or non-verbal expression. It’s a big part of how we represent ourselves. It’s how we bring context to what we are feeling and thinking within. Words can have such a powerful impact on somebody. We can use them for gratitude or to show love. We can use them to laugh or express anger. We can be bottling them up inside with a slow-burning frustration. Or we could be channeling them outward to keep from tensions rising. One thing that’s for sure is that talking about things is healthy, even when it feels like the most difficult thing to do.
It’s very human to think that whatever is on your mind is too horrible to speak out loud. However, if you have a healthy relationship with a friend or partner or perhaps a coach, it should be a safe place for you to speak about your thoughts out loud, good or bad. I can relate. I’ve struggled with bottling up my thoughts too. Never was I someone who would say what they’re thinking or how they’re feeling. To my surprise, I’ve found that the most growth I have experienced in life is when I am in fact willing to share. Releasing what’s inside your mind in a safe, constructive way gives your brain a break and a chance to regather. It also has a strong potential to improve any of your relationships.
