When we are in a triggering moment, coping mechanisms increase your ability to think clearly and reduces the tendency to act impulsively.
It is inevitable that you will face triggering moments throughout the course of your life. When we become provoked or feel anger rising from within it’s important to exercise coping skills to keep that rage under control. Without coping mechanisms, your ability to think clearly shrinks and we tend to take act impulsively when in these situations. Not only do coping skills help to keep us calm in times of stress or worry, but once you utilize them enough they become a habitual way of thinking. Here, you can live more in a place of peace and tranquility rather than anxiety and irritation.
Now, you might be wondering what exactly are coping skills that I can add to my disposal? I find genuine reflection and journaling is a great place to start. Self-awareness, as mentioned in a prior post, is where you can have a base to begin replacing old habits. Taking periodic breaks and using some time for meditation is also a way to practice reflection. In moments of tension, I have found breathing techniques to be some of the most effective ways of helping me respond to whatever I am dealing with. Deep breath in and a deep breath out gives your brain a quick break to focus on nothing else other than your breathing. That little period of peace allows your brain to start to de-escalate from its state of stress. From there, you can use better judgement on how to respond vs. react when experiencing tense moments.
