90% of clients who approach for business consulting service ask me to identify the most crucial department in their organization. During my initial years, it was perplexing to zero-in on the most significant department of these enterprises. For many business consultants around the world, with years of experience, its very difficult to give the verdict.
With 13 years of managing my industry which is into manufacturing, along with my experience as business consultant for businesses and startups in varied portfolios from logistics & supply chain, airlines, apparel manufacturing and distribution, offset printing, restaurants, film and media, web developing companies, colleges, real estate & construction and Govt. managed enterprises in waste water management, electricity transmission etc, I have witnessed that the Founder/ CEO who focus most of his energy/time in Operations, deploy strategic efforts that generates substantial revenues as compared to nominal revenues generated by founders/CEO who does not focus on Operations department.
We all want to be an exceptional achiever in our chosen endeavor. What makes us an exceptional business behemoth in future, is how we identify critical & important tasks and how we deal with these tasks first hand rather than delegating to our down-line.
In the process, I have observed that many of my clients have a light and diluted hold on Operations which is risky and suicidal . This gives them room to only have a minimal understanding on the operational dynamics and hence they become a victim of not even achieving the MOR (Minimal Optimal Result) and lose the Synergy to stay competitive.
As per my experiences, I strongly believe – “The number 1 department that needs to be under direct administration of the CEO is the Operations department which by and large controls all other departments both directly and indirectly, vertically and horizontally” . All financial decisions, hiring and firing decisions, inventory decisions, quality aspects, vision and mission of the enterprise, buying decisions, marketing decisions, selling decisions and many more strategic planning and executions happen holistically only in the Operations department .
In many of my interactions with SME’s, I have identified the non-existence of operations department. In these situations, I empower my client in creating the operations department and COACH him/her to start the way operations department functions from the scratch. Followed by my CONSULTING approach, the clients get to identify the KPI’s, develop and conceptualize the processes, create and streamline the communication channels with other existing departments.
Remember, a strong enterprise is not just built by a visionary leader or a dynamic team, its the effectiveness cum efficiency of the Operations department, which becomes a game changer by making – the enterprise to stand out amongst competition, an enterprise that is insulated from economic hardships, an enterprise that will be a winner amongst stiff competitors, an enterprise that stands tall against unforeseen & challenging times/situations (like covid lock-downs and ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict).
