So, You Hate Your Job...

Who hasn't worked at a job they dreaded going to? Getting out can be tough, but reading this article is a good start.
For the past five minutes, you have been in the parking lot giving yourself a pep talk. As you walk in, you put on a smile (or not) and pray the hours fly by. According to The Wall Street Journal, 51% of US workers reported job satisfaction in 2017. But, if you are in the 49% group, it’s a whole different story for you. Here are a few things to ponder as you try to survive.
If your boss or work environment is abusive, leave immediately.
If the situation you are in affects your mental or physical health, there is no amount of money that justifies staying. I once developed an ulcer while working in a toxic environment. It was an eye-opening experience as it put me in a situation where I had to choose between self-respect or a paycheck. If you are hurting, get out. Cash in your vacation time, find a quick job in retail and start the hunt for a better opportunity.
If it’s not, concentrate on growing, not groaning.
Use this uncomfortable situation to build your portfolio. Look at your experience and start plotting your next move. What kind of certifications could you obtain? Is there a special project that could give you a new skill set? How about that side hustle you always wanted to start? Turn the tide and make an opportunity out of a less than ideal chapter in your life.
Don’t settle for “good enough.”
It is so tempting to grab the first job offer you get. Making a fast jump could lead you down a similar road where you end up discontent. Think about the things you dislike now and create a few questions to ask interviewers. This will help you make sure you are upgrading instead of making a lateral move.
Always act with grace.
Self-branding is incredibly important. No matter your feelings about your current situation, always act with integrity. How people act is their karma, and how you act is yours. You never know who is watching and who could be a future boss, interviewer or decision maker. Besides, holding yourself to a higher stander and exuding confidence will drive your haters nuts!
Just because you hate your job now, does not mean it will always be this way. Accept this moment in time for what it is; a step in the right direction. If you play your cards right, you can turn this into a learning experience that will get you on the path of success.
