This article defines abundant mindset, outlines why it's important and offers some practical techniques for cultivating it in your daily life.
What is abundant mindset? It is the belief that there are enough or sufficient resources and successes for all of us to go around.
Having an abundant mindset is highly beneficial for personal growth and healthy wellbeing.
The term ‘abundant mindset’ was coined by Stephen Covey in his 1989 highly popular professional self-help book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, defining an abundant mindset as a concept in which a person believes there are enough resources and successes to share with others.
Abundant mindset is contrasted with a scarcity mindset, where there aren’t enough resources and as a result, we become unnecessarily competitive and destructive.
Practicing gratitude is an easy first step to cultivating an abundance mindset. This could be in the form of a gratitude journal or replaying what you are grateful for at night before you go to sleep. It’s also a great ice-breaker at the start of your team meetings to share with your colleagues what you are grateful for.
Expressing gratitude can be as simple as being grateful for a sunset or having shelter. It could be about being grateful for a colleague, a loved one or a stranger and the kindness that they showed you.
Another technique to cultivate an abundant mindset is to become consciously aware of your thoughts, cultivating more mindfulness. Your mindfulness is a muscle that can grow the more you use it – it’s a bit like going to the gym for your mind.
Once we are consciously aware of our thoughts we can recognise if these thoughts are coming from a place of fear and scarcity or freedom, positivity and abundance.
What are the stories we are telling ourselves? Are we being kind to ourselves and others with our thoughts?
The more you practice mindfulness, the more we can strengthen that mindful muscle and control our thoughts so that they are less about fear and scarcity and more about positivity and abundance.
The more our thoughts are filled with positivity and abundance, the more happier and fulfilled our lives will be.
