The CEO’s psychology is critical in defining the company’s success. According to various studies, the ability to manage one’s psychology is more difficult for a CEO than to learn leadership skills, organizational design, hiring, firing, and managing the financial health of the business. Making make-or-break decisions daily can be all-consuming, stressful, and lonely.
So what do successful business owners do differently?
According to a study done by Harvard, the most successful entrepreneurs are not successful because of the characteristics we normally think about… charismatic, extroverted, powerful, or passionate. It turns out that the most successful business owners work HARD at being self-aware. Here are the behaviors that this commitment to removing internal blocks looks like:
1.) MAKE DECISIONS QUICKLY
The speed and confidence in decision making is more important than the quality to successfully grow a business. Most humans hate failure and many amazing leaders get stuck in wanting to avoid the pain of making the wrong decision. Becoming more tolerant of rejection can help you move faster.
2.) CREATE EXCEPTIONAL VALUE
Understanding your audience, customers, investors, and team members’ needs and balancing that with getting results is how successful business owners win. It’s hard to see straight sometimes with so many different priorities and expectations. Working on the need to please everyone will help you create more value for everyone.
3.) PROACTIVELY ADAPT
Entrepreneurs continuously have to face situations where no playbook exists. Their ability to see many steps ahead and adjust the sails way in advance is a huge predictor of success. When we hold onto strategies that no longer serve the company out of fear of the unknown, we lose the game.
4.) DELIVER CONSISTENTLY
The ups and downs of entrepreneur-land can create tremendous anxiety and even depression. Managing your own psychology is essential to setting realistic expectations and delivering results. When CEO’s feel their best, they can show up day after day with the level of certainty, commitment and conviction required to lead.
