The Road Up Ahead

We are all on a road to somewhere. We are currently, right now, taking steps and moving forward to some destination. The ironic twist to the human experience is that the road we choose to travel can actually be shaped by our own choices. Unlike the roads we drive our cars on which have a predetermined path, life affords us the opportunity to build as we go towards our destination.
With that being said, knowing that you are the lead project manager over the construction of your life’s highway, maybe it would be good to take note of some highway construction best practices.
- Determine the destination.
- Survey the boundaries.
- Straighten the path.
- Clear the obstacles.
- Bridge the ditches.
- Lay down a strong foundation.
- Create a high traction surface.
- Put up guardrails near known hazards.
- Determine reasonable speed limits.
- Post information and directions often.
- Provide on and off ramps.
- Hit the road and travel.
I know I am preaching to the choir here when I say that all of this can still add up to a road to nowhere without the presence of God’s direction. That is why I said that we are simply the project manager. Our Father is the Master Developer. He holds the blueprint in His hands and until we go to Him and ask Him to show it to us we may just find our selves on a lifelong construction project that all the while has been running off a cliff.
Take a look at the road you are on today. Do you need to clarify the destination? Determine some new boundaries? Maybe you need to work on the solid foundation? How about slowing down or speeding up? And don’t forget to put up those guardrails. Maybe you have been traveling a road that someone else built before you. You may need to look for that exit ramp and get off that old road. Jesus Christ will flash some bright new neon signs in your path to get you moving in the right direction again if you will promise to look for them.
A tough question for all of us: Did God build the road I am on today through me, or did I build it on my own without Him?
