Are You Really In Command of Your Mind?

In this debuted article, I discussed the culprits of our unbeneficial behaviour patterns - Saboteurs, how they are destructive to our life.
“You cannot master anything — your business, your relationships or your finances — unless you first learn how to master yourself by disempowering your saboteurs.” -Tony Robbins
Ever watch kittens play? They can be chasing a laser beam with high alert and deadly focus, or they can be bouncing all over the place while knocking things (or themselves) over with no aim or direction.
Your mind can behave exactly like that kitten: whimsical, restless, capricious, and at times, totally uncontrollable.
When you are not in command of your mind, your external experiences tend to manifest themselves in a negative, unbeneficial way: You are self-sabotaging.
- You procrastinate about replying to an important email.
- You keep doubting yourself.
- You can’t say no to others, but then feel resentful.
- You still remember a stupid joke you made at a dinner party in 2007 and feel mortified.
- You are in constant frustration at work because no one does their jobs to the same standard as yours…
Voilà! You have met your saboteurs!
Saboteurs are the mind patterns that result in self-sabotaging behaviours. There are commonly 10 saboteurs, with the Judge as the master saboteur and the 9 accomplices. We are universally affected by the Judge and then are typically influenced by a couple of accomplices in particular.
Each saboteur functions with its own motivation and style. For instance, the Pleaser is driven by the desire to gain acceptance(from others) whilst the Restless maintains a sense of reassurance by juggling many tasks at once. The Judge sits above them all and critiques, often disapprovingly: “This is not good enough”. “You could’ve done more”. “You should do this”. Consequently, you repeat the same patterns over and over.
Here is the irony: saboteurs bring the exact opposite results of what they promise. In the case of the Restless, your restless self has you believing that you can multitask and work on several projects at once. But in reality, your lack of priority and focus mean nothing gets done properly and you end up feeling more fatigued and insecure.
