“Life is a daring adventure or it is nothing.” – Helen Keller
Many thoughts go around in my head when I think of this wonderful quote by someone who had to be daring beyond anyone’s idea of what daring might be, just so she could truly live – and not be relegated to a life on the sidelines of life…and what a life she had and how many amazing things she accomplished indeed.
When we each pursue our own adventures we come to different crossroads where decisions must be made. This is where life becomes most confusing – especially for those who consciously follow life as the pursuit of their adventure. For them, many significant crossroads will be encountered for they are moving through life at a higher speed.
So what, you might ask, keeps the most successful people making the right decisions at each crossroads? The answer is a good, strong, and well-built internal compass. That is it – bottom line.
In order to succeed, this internal compass must be comprised of several key ingredients which need to be under constant revision to ensure their proper alignment. Some of the most critical ingredients are: vision (we must keep in sight what our true goals are so we don’t get blinded by “shining object” found on the way), determination (there will be many challenges that will threaten to take us down, physically and/or emotionally), integrity (staying true to who we are and what we pursue is critical), humble pride (we must acknowledge and celebrate our achievements as they are obtained but do so remembering our place and the long journey left to undertake and know that entitlement is a very ugly monster that always takes us down if we invite “him” in), dignity (because humility can push us into the state of thinking we are not worthy, and this too can become a trap).
To some, this may sound like too much work. To others, it will be nourishment to continue their journey into their very own daring adventure.
The knowledge of who we really are and how well we know our own internal compass is what must empower us for our empowerment to be sustainable. Keeping us true to follow the dictums of our internal compass and not allow ourselves to be derailed is in truth the most difficult part of our daring adventure. This is the value of accountability and accountability is what is most needed to reach our highest goals. Making sure that we are held accountable to ourselves, our vision and our goals, is what great life coaches, executive coaches and business coaches do.
If you have a dream, if you choose to embark in your own daring adventure, make sure you do not jeopardize it…and you can make sure by hiring a coach that will hold you accountable to get to the finish line you want to cross.
