What can you do if you are having an "off day" and want to bring calm to help lighten and brighten up?
When the weather starts getting warm and the days longer, it’s easier to be in a sunny happy mood.
But what can you do if you are having an “off day” and want to bring calm to help lighten and brighten up?
- Visit Mother (Nature that is.) Take a walks. Take off your shoes, stand in the dirt or sand or grass. Connect with nature. Hear the birds chirping and feel the breeze on your face. Take a deep breath and enjoy the bounty that mother nature has given you.
- Live in the moment, the here and now. Most of us have a tendency to think in the past, or way into the future. But there is a calming to being in the here and now. Right where you are at. In the present moment. Savor the now.
- Take deep long breaths. This rejuvenates you. Breath in slowly to a count of four. Hold your breath for 4 counts. Release the breath slowly for 4 counts. Then hold for 4 counts. Repeat the whole sequence if you’d like. But often one time through this breath work brings calm and peace.
- Connect with someone. We are social creatures. Seeking the support of someone who understands your emotions and your experiences is an excellent way to re-group.
- Read. Read. Read. Ideas in books can open your mind, take you to new worlds, they can teach or entertain and often do both at the same time.
- Daydream. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in the most relaxing place you can envision. Imagine all the ways your senses engage with this place. What do you see? Hear? Smell? Feel? Taste? Visualize this soothing image and place yourself there fully.
- Take a nap. Sometimes the best medicine in this fast paced culture is a nice, quiet time to rest. Lie down. Turn off electronic devices and snuggle up for a cozy nap.
- Burn a candle or incense. Sensory experiences can help you change your state of mind and provide a soothing calm. Candles, incense, and various essential oils can take you away from your stressors and into the rewarding sensations of aromatherapy.
- Listen to music. Music can shift your brain wave patterns. The trick with music is to choose sounds that evoke the mood you wish to feel, not those that reinforce a mood you’re struggling to change.
Energizing loud music for when you need ramping up and soothing music for calming down.
- Create! Paint, draw, bake, sew…. Baking or creating an art or craft can busy your hands and mind, and lead to the reward of a completed project to add a little lift to your spirits.
