Education Coaching & Career Coaching - The Perfect Match

When you're thinking about changing careers are you also thinking about the education or re-training it will take to get you to your goals?
Career Coaching is what most people think of when they’re looking for a career change. They know they aren’t happy or fulfilled for some reason in their current workplace and they know they need to move on. So they talk to a Career Coach who helps them see how their talents, values, skills and abilities could be a better fit in a new work environment.
The next step is often to think about education. What kind of re-training will be required to meet these new goals? Will upgrading be required? This is a whole different type of conversation and this is where Career Coaches may lack the knowledge or expertise to really help. This is where an Education Coach, Academic Coach or Academic Life Coach would come in.
In my coaching practice I combine both Education Coaching and Career Coaching so clients are always keeping career goals and education requirements in balance.
I hold a Master of Science in Adult Learning, and masters-level coursework in Career Counselling. I’ve been working in the career + education field for about 13 years.
I’ve worked with hundreds of students over the past decade who have come to me to explore careers and how to leverage education to get to their dream jobs.
It happens quite often that a student will tell me about their dream job and I’ll tell them that it will take 6 or 7 years of education to get there.
Then we do a cost-benefit analysis. We examine if the time, effort and financial cost of that education is going to be worth it. We think about how many more years they plan to be in the workforce, how long it will take to get a return on investment, how long will it take to work their way up if they’re starting from the bottom again.
These are all huge, important considerations that just a Career Coach or just an Academic Life Coach may not be able to help with.
Instead of choosing one or the other, I encourage you to take the next step and connect with me to get the advantage of working with a career + education specialist. You’ve already taken some great steps to get to this point. Let’s keep you moving forward!
