10 Reasons To Work With An Education Coach or Academic Life Coach

Is working with an education coach or academic life coach right for you? Here are 10 reasons to consider when starting your education journey.
You may be curious if working with an education coach (sometimes called an academic life coach) is right for you. The truth is, it all depends on what you are looking for.
Some education coaches focus on helping students who have learning differences or other factors which may make learning more challenging. Some educational coaches work with students in a “big picture” way – helping with study skills and time management.
In my education coaching practice, I take this a step further by helping you get to know the specific features of the school you will be attending. I teach you how to be the best university student you can be. To my knowledge there is no other academic or educational coaching like this.
So, is Education Coaching/ Academic Life Coaching for you? How many of the following statements do you agree with?
1) You are working toward a competitive program (such as physician, lawyer, dentist, etc) and you need every advantage you can get. You want to avoid any setbacks in grades that many students experience in their first year.
2) You don’t feel like you have many role models who can show you “how it’s done” when it comes to university. Maybe you’re the first person in your family to attend post-secondary, or maybe your parents or siblings did go to college or university, but it wasn’t in Canada, or it was before the days of internet (things have changed a lot!).
3) Being a good student has been easy for you in high school where everyone knows who you are, but you feel like things will probably get a lot harder in university (you’re right! It usually does). OR You haven’t been the greatest student in high school, but you are ready to ramp things up now that you’ve been accepted to university.
4) You really feel like you just don’t know where to start or how to do this whole university thing. It’s confusing and overwhelming and maybe a bit scary.
5) You don’t think your family will be able to help you navigate the university system, even though they might like to. Maybe English is not their primary language, or they don’t live close to the school, or they simply have too many other commitments like work, other siblings or travel.
6) You have other things you want to focus on in addition to academics (such as working, volunteering, athletics, or student government).
7) You want to build a strong academic foundation that will carry you through your entire university career and beyond.
8) You want to start to become independent from your parents, but you know they will have lots of questions and want to be involved with your university education. As an education coach I can help keep everyone happy – allowing you to become independent (and your parents to be involved) while still maintaining a great relationship with your family.
9) You’re willing to make the investment of time, to set goals, and to do what it takes to achieve them. Your parents are also open to the idea of academic coaching.
10) You want an expert to personally work with you to help make sure you absolutely get it right.
