What really, really matters, and it's not what you think.

It has nothing to do with what you look like....
What really, really matters, and it’s not what you think.
After my shower I ran to the market, hair wet, no makeup, comfy old tattered shorts, a mismatched top and worn gym shoes.
How did I feel?
- Dowdy
- Drab
- Not put together
- Super super frumpy
But I was only making a quick stop to grab a few things…
Then, of course, as it always seems to happen, I run into a half a dozen people I know.
I cringed. I didn’t want anyone I knew seeing me.
If we made eye contact, I waved a quick “Hi” before I bolted.
If they didn’t see me yet, I’d hide down one aisle, hoping I could get out of the store before they saw me.
Were those people bad people or what?
No.
Not at all.
Actually, I would call most of them friends or very nice acquaintances.
So what in the hell happened?
I’ll tell you what.
I let how I felt about myself (frumpy, dowdy…) make me avoid perfectly nice people.
- I was ashamed.
- Embarrassed.
- It had nothing to do with them, and 100% to do with me.
Does that mean I should only go to the market with makeup, a fancy perfect fashionable outfit and wonderfully styled hair?
No. (Unless, of course, I want to)
What would have happened if I stopped, acknowledged them, treated them with kindness, and spent a few minutes in a pleasant conversation…. instead of avoiding them?
Do you think later on, they would have remembered what I had on?
Possibly.
But more than likely not.
Do me a favor.
Think back to a nice interaction with someone. What do you remember about it?
Was it how they looked?
I bet you don’t remember what they had on.
On the other hand, I bet you remember how you felt while you were with them.
How they treated you.
So, what really REALLY matters…. is not what we are wearing, but how we treat people.
Keep being wonderful, imperfect you-
Lois
