Leadership Coaching for Emotional Intelligence

Corporations the world over train Managers in EI skills for ROI. The Church can benefit greatly by doing the same. We just call it the "one anothers".
Benefits of Leadership Coaching
For Emotional Intelligence in the Local Church
Leadership coaching is recognized by Corporate America as possibly the most effective way for leaders to learn and grow in the area of “emotional intelligence”. Emotional intelligence (EI) has been proven to account for 80-90% of the overall success of a leader. The more EI leaders that an organization has, the greater its chances of sustained growth and success. A leader’s domain expertise is obviously important, but without EI, he/she cannot reach peak performance personally or take the organization to new heights. All leaders can apply themselves to improving their EI capacities, and two of the best ways to do that are to 1) receive personal leadership coaching and 2) learn to do leadership coaching.
EI capacities have been the subject of scientific research over the last several decades by the brightest minds in the field of leadership development, but Christians would otherwise recognize EI traits as the “fruits of the Spirit” and the “one anothers” in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul would have been considered the first EI expert as he instructed the church of his day in Christ-like relationship and leadership skills. A good book on this subject is Relationships Matter: Lessons from Paul and the People Who Impacted His Life by Tony Cooke.
Emotional intelligence is all about relationship skills which include 1) self awareness, 2) self management, 3) awareness of others, and 4) management of others. The Bible has much to say about those subjects – science has only recently proven the effectiveness of these practices in the every day business world. And, Leadership Coaching for Emotional Intelligence is the change methodology which most effectively enables the development of EI.
Leadership Coaching is the art and science of helping a person become what God intends so that he/she may accomplish what God has ordained for him from the beginning of the world. A Coach is a “change expert” who comes alongside of a motivated person to listen closely and ask powerful questions, to assess and resource, to support and challenge, and to encourage and hold accountable. Most sincere believers are not lacking in information – they know the truth. What is lacking is their involvement in a proven process of change which wisely involves a Christian coach who wants for them what they, and God, want for themselves.
Corporations utilize professional coaching because of its “return on investment” (ROI) – it contributes significantly to the bottom line. The local church can use coaching to further the kingdom of God significantly. Some of the many and varied ways the church might use coaching could include:
• discipleship
• relational evangelism
• mentoring (adults, couples, teens)
• finding purpose and ministry calling
• leadership development (staff and laity)
• relationship enrichment (marriage and parenting)
• women’s and men’s ministries
• training for small group leaders
• training for church planters and missionaries
• training for deacons or other “servant” ministries
• lay Christian coaching to help members with growth issues
Church Staff and Lay Leaders who have been trained in a program called Leadership and Discipleship Coaching, have said this about their experiences with coaching and coach training:
“As a Stephen Minister and Bible teacher I know the joy that comes from seeing lives changed. I have seen real change in myself, my care-receivers and the members of my Bible study as a result of taking advantage of this training.”
—-B. Prince
“Coaching has truly transformed my way of serving as a Bible teacher and a small group facilitator.”
—-James P.
“Nothing has impacted my life as much as coaching. In coaching I learned to recognize the stumbling blocks that were keeping God from accomplishing His purposes through me. I am now free to live a life of balance and total dependence on God. Coaching has totally transformed me and I am living the abundant life God has promised.”
—-P. Luna
