Are You Waiting To Be Sure Before You Act?

Overcoming Analysis Paralysis
Do you often tell yourself that you will change ‘x’ about yourself, and you start but months (sometimes years) go by, and the needle does not move?
As a coach, here is what I often hear things like, –
- I want to, but I am not yet ready
- I am thinking about it
- It is important to me, so I am doing research
- I do not want to be wrong
- I want to be sure
- I am not motivated yet
- I want it, but I want it to be easy. I can not spend a lot of time and effort on it
Our mind protects us from discomfort and keeps us rooted in the state of inaction, which only fuels inertia. And not surprisingly, nothing changes when nothing changes.
Wayne Gretzky said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.
The fact is that opportunities will pass by if you wait to feel ready. You will never feel sure. There are no guarantees in life. Growth lies on the other side of discomfort, so do not expect an easy ride. Remember, motivation is an outcome of action and mini successes rather than the other way around.
So, this year, chalk up plans to pursue your goals. Do not wait for perfection. Take messy action. Be curious about what worked and what did not. Fail forward, refine your approach and try again. Commit to your non-negotiables, and do not let your mind play tricks on you. Thank it for wanting to protect you from pain/discomfort but forge ahead, nevertheless. Start where you are with what you have, and go from one milestone to the next.
