What researchers have found is that a humble leader has at least three characteristics that give companies excellence in business.
What researchers have found is that a humble leader has at least three characteristics that are like a three-engine rocket giving companies the thrust needed to go from a good company to a great one.
These three characteristics are not new; however, they are redefined within the framework of humility.
Confidence
A humble leader is not defined by what they know or how much they know, but by the quality of their thinking, listening, relating and collaborating (Humility is the New Smart, chapter 2).
This gives the leader a new confidence based not only on what he can provide to a team, but mainly in how he can provide a culture of trust for teams to bring their best to accomplish a task.
If a leader is not confident in this way, he will always defend his way of thinking, doing and fixing things that are always limited to the possibilities of his or her own perspective. In the SMA (smart machines age) information and change happens so fast that it is virtually impossible to rely on the expertise of just one person.
So, humble confidence is not about trusting in my own experience, academic rewards and persona, but rather has to do with being open minded, quieting the ego, managing emotions and establishing strong connections with others (Humility is the new smart, Part 2 “NewSmart Behaviors ). Here is where the confidence of a humble leader lies.
Confidence redefined by humility, looks like the following table:
Old Smart
I know
I tell
Defend my views
Closed mind
Insecure if beliefs are challenged
New Smart (humility based)
I’m good at not knowing
I ask
Improve my views
Open mind
Insecure if beliefs are not challenged
