This articles shares some reflection prompts that help settle down quick and make an impact in a new role.
Have you recently taken up a new role?
First of all, congratulate yourself on the new opportunity. You did the hard work, and you deserve to celebrate.
Next, recognize that whether it is a role in a new organization or a new role in the current organization, it comes with uncertainty about new responsibilities, people, and rules of the game that need to be figured out. A new role requires you to prove yourself all over again, which can be stressful.
Instead of feeling the pressure, set out with humility, an open mind, and the acknowledgment that you need to do some work to acclimatize to the new role before you make an impact. Initial days will be a steep learning curve. You can intentionally put your energy into making the best of this time to shorten the period that you take to settle down.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. They indicate your keenness to get started, enthusiasm to learn, and the desire to engage and do well.
Given below are 5 prompts that would help you get started in your new role –
1. What does success look like?
2. Who do you need to be to succeed in this role?
3. How do you need to change to deliver in this role?
4. What do you need to learn?
5. What relationships do you need to develop?
Set realistic goals with your boss and create a learning plan for yourself to figure out the above. Give yourself the target to accomplish it within the first quarter of starting your new role. Your boss will be happy to see your initiative and help you ramp up. Being intentional and focused during the initial days will make a great first impression and set the foundation for your future success. You will send clear signals that you are invested in your new role and the success of the organization.
