Now that the world has changed, even the “traditional” parameters of success have changed. People are looking for more meaning along with money.
HERE’S THE COMMON GENERIC STUFF FIRST
If you are familiar with my work, then you know I avoid offering generic “how to” steps. Having success, on your terms, is such a personal and individual thing. And the word “success” means so many different things to people. Actually, based on the etymology of the word from Latin, it really just means to “make things happen”. So if you are in that process, maybe more like progress, then you “have success”.
What does success look and feel like for you?
Now that people have had an opportunity to reconnect to their values, possibly define what they really want in life, and see the options available in this ever changing world, the “traditional” parameter of success has changed. Before it was more about how much money you earned or had as well as the prestige of the title or role you carried. The younger generation especially, are valuing free time and work life balance without the stress, burn out, depression or overwhelm the older generations experienced.
Secret 1:
To get farther faster in this fast paced and speedy techie work world you might consider having shorter term goals. Instead of a 3 or 5 year plan, focus on a few things to reach for every 3 months.
As distraction are at an all time high with the availability of news and entertainment 24/7 plus instant messaging to interrupt your flow every minute, it is vital to take control of your time.
Secret 2:
Plan productive time and stick to the hours best suited to your biorhythms. You might be more concentrated on details early in the morning and have a slump after lunch so plan accordingly.
Secret 3:
Finally challenge yourself to not only be a linear thinker from a left brain, logical way but also integrate right brain creativity and intuition to your work style.
Secret 4:
See “Work” as an extension of who you are!
When you check out surveys on work place satisfaction, you might be astounded to read how many people are unhappy with their jobs. Having been in the Personal & Professional Development Industry since 1989, plus growing up with my father as an HR Director, this fact really hurts.
What does it take to really love what you do from 9-5 in an office or as an entrepreneur? Is it about the skills required or the tasks that need to be performed?
From my experience Coaching people from all walks of life, in over 20 countries of the world, what changes how you play the “work game” is how well you know yourself. You can be doing something all day, that not necessarily you “enjoy” but you know that there is an innate talent that you are using. Take for example the hospital situation.
Back when I was 14 years old, I was a candy striper in a hospital volunteering 3 mornings a week all summer long (while my friends were having fun at the pool). It was such a life changing and rewarding experience.
Sure, changing the sheets, bed pans and sacks filled with puss was not what I would call “enjoyable”, but it was through doing those tasks that I realised how much I love to care for people, be with people, listen to their stories, have a nice word to say to back to them and smile.
So for me, it is not about “what” tasks you do but who you are when you are doing them which shapes how you do them, well or poorly, which affects then the outcome you get with the effort or energy you put into them too.
The “quick fix” so many people seem to want is to jump ship and change a job they don’t like. But again, from my experience, this only replicates the same dynamics with different faces in different places. It is less about the task.
Secret 5:
Put more “You” into your “Work”.
It’s more about you having clear answers to fundamental, let’s say, existential questions.
There is a hierarchy to these, meaning at the top, or the first ones are more important than the ones below or after them. You might be familiar with decision making policies and whether they follow a “top-down” or a “bottom up” approach. This is the same.
At the top, the first question to answer is “who am I”. You could go off on many tangents here that include philosophy, anthropology, religion and so on. But let’s stay practical. You are a human being in a 3D reality with DNA and an innate set of unique talents that you are here to express. That’s what a Your Life Your WayTM Personality Profile is about.
Next is “why am I here” and again you could find inspiration from a wide variety of sources but for our Methodology is it simply a phrase that blends your core 3 talents. It is used as a tool to energise and motivate you. As well as something you use to establish your priorities.
Moving down the hierarchy, you get to the question of “where”. I battle with myself as to whether this should be at the top for how important it is because if you are not in the right environment you will never excel. Each person has a place in which they belong that facilitates a natural flow of potential and creativity. There are a few overall categories like being in a leadership role, being a follower, being a visionary or being a freelance consultant.
Most of my One on One Coaching clients are looking to transition into another job and find that getting clear answers to this sequence of questions essential to better and more conscious decisions. It is a top down approach.
The next question is “what”. People ask all the time, “what should I do”. So when searching for a new job the obvious “what” could be to write a compelling resume or CV. You can give people lists of things to do, but going back to my hospital story, the “what” is often mechanical, repetitive or boring. Who is doing them and why is so much more personal and emotional. This charges the task with joy when understood.
So to accelerate success, getting what you want, then put more “you” into your day!
Finally, the last question is “how”. Google has “trained us” to search for this answer but it has made us more “how to” seekers than “who are you” seekers. Sure you can’t find a personalised answer to that on a generic internet page. But maybe not just Google, possibly also the education system has not emphasised enough knowing yourself.
Secret 6: Learn skills that extend from who you are.
Yes, it is vital now to up level your skillset since the work world is changing. This is the “what” to do. But never have that be removed from “who” you are. Innately you have a set of talents that mean you are naturally good at doing certain things. Remember the kid in your class who was a natural public speaker and you marvelled at how she was not afraid to speak in front of the whole school. Or think about the guy who was a natural mediator easily breaking up fights on the playground helping others get along.
This is what I mean. Those talents are “who” they are. And there is a need, and will always be a need for who you are. You are a natural at certain things. Stay connected to this so when the work world asks us to reinvent ourselves every 3 years, you will stay in your zone of genius.
To accelerate your success, you want to tap into “who” you are and simply extend that into a role or profession. There is no difference, or should not be, between who you are with values, qualities and preferences in your free time and the you during work time. Take off the “blinders” of you selling your skills to solve problems and get paid. Become clearer, more comfortable and more confident in who you are. Show up the best version of who you can be that day on a journey of better. This is how to enjoy every day.
