Does leading employees remotely overwhelm you? Well you are not alone. Remote leadership is a new and daunting challenge for many leaders.
In fact, a recent survey presented in Forbes found that more than three quarters of leaders had never overseen a team remotely before the Covid-19 pandemic. Remote leadership poses a tough challenge for many leaders. Minetum Consulting can help leaders adjust to remote leadership.
We are eager to help you become a better remote leader. Here are 3 tips for effective remote leadership:
1. Be Accessible and Approachable
It can be difficult to connect with team members remotely. When working in an office, conversation can be made in all sorts of ways. It could be through small talk at the coffee machine or getting lunch with coworkers. These opportunities to connect with others are often missed when working remotely. It is crucial to make you self accessible and approachable so you don’t miss opportunities to connect with team members.
2. Make Mental Health a Priority
A recent study showed that, 60% of adults and two thirds of young adults say that their mental health has gotten worse since the pandemic. This is an issue that can not be ignored. Encouraging a healthy work life balance can help your employees maintain good mental health. Make sure to ask your employees what would help them most; whether it be online counselling, scheduled time with other employees to chat or other types of activities.
3. Avoid MicromanagingIt is common for leaders to believe that remote working is less productive. In a recent study done by Harvard Business Review 38% of leaders said the remote workers were less productive. But employees have a much different perspective with 3 quarters of them saying that they are just as productive working remotely. This type of attitude from leaders can cause them to micro manage. This can cause unnecessary stress among their employees. It is important to avoid this type of behavior.
