Keeping the Ego aside!

This article talks about how managing our ego can help
This particular employee who was part of my team for about 5 years walks up to me one day and says that he wants to leave as he got an offer from another organization.
I asked him about the role and the organization.
While the organization was good, based on his strengths/skills, I thought the role may not suit him.
I had 2 options – either tell him that the role wouldn’t suit him or make him realize by asking him questions. I chose the latter.
I asked him to list down his skills & strengths on a piece of paper. He did.
I then asked him to list down the skills & strengths required for the role. He did.
I asked him to compare and let me know his thoughts – he identified the skills & strengths that he lacks for the role. Then, I asked him whether it would be easy to acquire them. He felt it would be tough.
Then I asked if he would still go for the role. He thought and said he would go as the money he’s offered helped him financially.
A salary correction was not possible.
I wished him success and told him to stay in touch – told him to give his best and told him to let me know if he ever wanted to come back.
Post 12 months, he spoke at length with me and said he wanted to come back.
When I spoke to the team manager, where I thought he’d be a good fit, the manager was reluctant to take him back as he decided to leave despite asking him to stay back. It took a while for me to convince the manager that we all make mistakes, which doesn’t mean the end of the world.
He joined us back after a few weeks.
