The importance of setting aside our identity when playing any role
I often tell people that from every coaching session, I always have learnings and takeaways.
Last week I was in a coaching session, and my coachee was a senior HR leader. Incidentally, he was also a professionally qualified coach.
After the coaching session, I asked him for his feedback as a coach.
He responded by saying, “As a coachee, I felt comfortable, I could trust you, and I got what I was looking for by the end of the session. But, when the session began, I was here as a coachee only. So, I never looked at your session as a coach.”
Now, that’s being in the moment and total surrender. If he was comparing how I was doing as a coach, he would not have experienced the full benefits of the session.
It isn’t easy for a person to set aside their identity and focus on the moment based on the situation. I thanked him for the valuable takeaway.
Starting that day, I began practicing it more consciously.
In whatever role one plays, it’s really important to surrender to the moment and be fully present there. Only then can one expect to receive what one is set out to.
