Creating Balance

The big word everyone wants in work, life, family vs friends…Balance - we all want it.
The big word everyone wants in life…Balance. Whether it is work/life balance, good vs not-so-good food balance, kids vs friends balance or any other kind of balance you crave, we all want it. Now actually being about to achieve the balance we all want is quite another thing…or is it?
I know you know how to find balance in your life…we all do. We just don’t do it. Let’s take exercise for example. We all want a life where we can balance our day to day, kids, family, friends and take care of our bodies. The main excuse not to exercise. you probably guessed it – ‘I don’t have the time.’
If you have time to play on the internet randomly checking out your friends on social media or playing games, you have time to exercise. You need to figure out your priority first. Or, where you can, you could do both checking your social media while walking on a treadmill. What we need to do is prioritize what is important to our health and wellbeing. Is playing the new game on your computer better for your health than taking a 20 mins walk outside with your family? Probably not.
If you are a corporate climb-up the-ladder type of person working 60-hour work weeks, then you need to find balance. Exercise does us a lot of good from keeping us in shape, to giving us a break from the day-to-day needs of the office or workplace. But what about your family needs? What about your needs? Burnout is real and comes with the constant long hours trying to get to the top of the ladder. If you want to be at the top, good for you. That is your choice. However, do not forget balance in life. There is more to living than work, in most cases.
Here is a great tip to help with work/life balance (or really any other kind of balance). Put it in your calendar, in your phone or whatever device or method you use for appointments. Make an appointment with yourself and KEEP IT! For example, if you forget to take a lunch at work, schedule in a 20-30 mins break 4-5 hours after you start working (or as is appropriate by law). You can’t work during this time. This time is dedicated to your relaxation, reading, calling the kids to say hi, eating…just do not work. When we take a break mid way – a true break – through the day we can work with a clearer head and may not get as tired or make as many mistakes. Breaks are important, so book them for yourself and do not disappoint yourself. If you would have booked a dinner with friends, would you break that deal? Not likely, so don’t break the deal with yourself either.
Finding the right way to create balance in your life is very individual and can mean very different things, so it is important to ask for help or even ask a friend what they see. Maybe those extra set of eyes may help you find that 1 thing that brings you a sense of balance in your life.
