A self-discovery coaching worksheet to help you define your personal strengths, weaknesses and values to work on your growth and personal development.
Grab some paper and a pen to read this article! Why? It’s actually an exercise!
You are going to work finding out why YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR using the skills and strengths you have and want to develop. This exercise is similar to how a coaching conversation could go without quite as much detail or deep diving, so get ready to try something new!
For each question dig deep to be completely honest with yourself without being defensive or blocking your true feelings and thoughts. If you think of an answer quickly, dig deeper and read/ask the question again to find more answers, then keep going, then repeat again! You should go back and ask yourself the same question 3 or 4 times if you really feel you are only touching the surface of the deep honest truth! Maybe start with a recent memory, then a less recent memory, to a memory a few years before that, and then – think of a childhood experience related to the thought you are working on. I think here, you will find “aha” moments.
It’s a good exercise is to think of challenges you’ve encountered as well. This often highlights strengths of how you overcame certain situations.
Think broadly and include everything big or small. If the same talent, skill or success keeps popping up over and over, this suggest a deep strength. If you consistently think of challenging events, think of how you overcame those difficult times – these outcomes are your strengths as well.
1. What strengths do you have that come to mind quickly?
Think of 3 strengths that come to mind for you right away.
What do you enjoy, or love doing, and make you smile? (usually points to your strengths)
2. What do others value in you?
What do people usually compliment you on or about?
Ask 3 friends/acquaintances what they admire in you or see as your top strengths?
Think about what people usually come to you for and ask for help with or ask to advise on.
3. Think about your previous successes?
Query yourself why you succeeded at those jobs or tasks?
To help you dig a bit, what were your favourite subjects in school and are in life?
Thinking about those favourite subjects and previous successes, what personal traits do you recognize and give credit to?
4. What have you learned from your tough times? (this one can be a tough one. Think of the event that caused hardship. Then picture yourself in those times and what you thought it was like. What was reality? And then reminisce how you pulled yourself through the challenging time.)
What challenges have you overcome and what strengths helped you along the way?
Have you ever learned to hide things, skills or developments when amidst challenging times? What were they?
5. What do you yearn for? And the, what do you admire in others?
Is there a passion you yearn to do?
What talents do you have to accomplish this yearning passion or goal?
What skills or strengths do you have?
What do you admire in others?
Do you see a connection between what your strengths are, what you are capable of, what you are missing, and what you want to do?
Now, do you see that you ARE capable of accomplishing anything you put your mind to?
So why haven’t you done it yet?
What holds you back?
Do you feel any jealous tendencies towards an accomplished person? Or fear to accomplish your goal when comparing yourself to others that stand out for you?
Finding your strengths and what you admire in (or be jealous toward) others can offer subconscious agendas in your mind as to why you haven’t tackled that goal you dream of achieving, and haven’t yet!
