8 Red Flags you are in a career rut
I had been feeling stuck for a few years. I dreaded the thought of being in the same place next year. I was working long hours and gaining no traction. I knew I was in a career rut because family and friends started to call out my mood and behaviour. In fact, at one point I had dark circles under my eyes, I had gotten much thinner than normal and I was not feeling motivated and inspired. I was not my usual, happy, energized self. I made good money (a.k.a. golden handcuffs), my role seemed cushy to people around me, but I wasn’t feeling fulfilled, I knew I wanted more and came to realize I wasn’t tapping into my true potential. I felt like I was intelligent enough so I should be able to make a change on my own, but I had no idea what I wanted to do or how I could make it happen – I needed a plan. Everyday that went by I felt a greater sense of self-doubt and my confidence levels slipping away. I knew something had to change…
8 red flags you are in a career rut:
1) Your career is not progressing, you’ve been made promises which never materialized
2) Your health is suffering, you feel unwell, have unexplained health issues or speak negatively about the work you do or your employer
3) You’ve felt stuck for a year or more
4) You don’t feel challenged anymore, you are bored, lack energy, creativity and enthusiasm in your work and it is becoming obvious to co-workers
5) Your work lacks purpose, meaning and fulfillment to the point you don’t want to learn anything new
6) You feel unappreciated and overlooked for promotions and other assignments
7) You are frustrated about the work you are doing and are disengaged a majority of the time
8) Your family and friends are starting to notice and are calling you out on your mood and behaviour
