Longer days, remote work, lockdowns, Zoom fatigue, minimal meaningful face to face contact and lack of brainstorming is causing tremendous stress, isolation and loneliness for many leaders.
Some leaders had to make quick decisions about how to move their companies forward in a pandemic, had to save employee jobs – including their own job – had to layoff workers, had to scramble to a create workspace at home, while supporting remote workers with their transition. Others had to juggle family responsibilities as kids were moved to online school systems or had be at home everyday and others needed to manage care for aging or ill parents. All of this pressure has sent tidal waves of unprecedented stress levels through many businesses and households and the pressure continues to mount as long term impact to organizations and families becomes clearer.
One thing is clear: for many leaders, it can get lonely at the top.
Other leaders have had the reverse problem and needed to take action to deal with a massive, sudden surge in demand while ensuring compliance to Covid-19 restrictions and production continued to meet business growth.
Many leaders report they have experienced many of the same frustrations as their employees.
In a leadership study completed by Oracle – who surveyed more than 12,000 employees across 11 countries – 39% of leaders said they had “difficulties collaborating with teams”, 35% reported issues “managing increased stress or anxiety”, and 29% said they had “trouble learning new technologies needed for remote work”. Leaders feel alone, especially ones who live alone.
During coaching calls with my clients, they report the need to reconnect, gain clarity, reprioritize, tap into their true potential as a leader with authenticity and vulnerability, require a confidence boost, to create a plan of action to prevent further unhappiness and burn out, and to tactics to reduce their anxiety levels to avoid falling into a mental health crisis situation.
Together, let’s take the loneliness out of leadership.
