No pain no gain. Truth of myth?
Everyone has heard the phrase no pain no gain. But what exactly does that mean and does it always have to be true? We all know it’s true at the gym but what about when you want to make a change in your life? Is it true there also?
Let’s think about this for a moment. Most of the time we tend to want to make change when something in our life isn’t working for us. And most likely the reason that things in our lives aren’t working for us is because of our thinking and our choices that have allowed us to be in a situation where we are unhappy or unfulfilled. We tend to get comfortable in our thinking and our habits even at the price of true happiness. So, what causes us to get stuck where we are? Many times, it’s fear of changing because when we change, it can trigger some emotional pain. But just like building muscles, emotional pain makes us much stronger people. Too often we only change when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing.
But why does change often come with pain? Many times it’s because when we change for the better, many of the actors in our life don’t want us to change. Positive change of oneself can leave others feeling left behind in the dust and leave them feeling that you think you are better than them. This isn’t true and is only a way for people to justify staying where they are and not “being like you”. If you have unhealthy people in your life and you want to change to become healthy, it’s likely going to hurt when you see the people you would expect to support you, turn their back on you.
Another example of change causing pain can be when you start really observing your life and the choices you have made up till now. That pain is temporary and the reward of learning to do better for yourself can be a momentous gain. It doesn’t matter if you have made bad choices in the past. Own them, learn why you made them, and then make the changes in your life that allows you to make better choices.
Like the gym analogy, deciding to get healthy and stronger in your own life will be worth the work. Do you really want to stay in an unhealthy relationship, job or lifestyle or do you want to build your life in such a way that you are stronger, healthier, more fulfilled and satisfied with your life? And like working out at the gym, it takes practice and consistency. You need to put in the work, but you don’t need to do that alone. Just like hiring a personal trainer for your body, you hire a life coach to help you with your life. A life coach will help you get rid of old negative and limiting belief ways and show you new ways to reach the goals and desires you aspire to.
I offer my clients a workout program that I refer to as the EFG Workout. Effort, Focus and Growth. You must be ready to put in the effort to go the life gym. Not going to the life gym and expecting change is as nonproductive as not going working out and expecting to build muscles. You must also become focused. What areas of your life do you want to change? Get very focused on what you want and be willing to the work to achieve it. And then get ready for growth. Begin to grow in the area you want to change and improve.
The EFG Workout is guaranteed to make positive changes in your life if you are willing to do the work. If you are ready, then consider hiring me as your life coach.
