Most of us have been trained from our upbringing and our environments to “work work work” and to associate our value with what we can do, achieve, conquer. It’s not that “hard work” is a villain in our stories, in fact it is a necessary component to living a meaningful life. However, all of the mantras of “no days off” and “on my grind” has curated a culture that produces human doings and not human beings.
What happened to that inner child who wants to create just because, who feels alive in play? Many of us have lost the art of play and the purity of imagining and need to get reacquainted with it. The use of our imaginations must go beyond building capital, but must sow seeds in orchards of rich meaning and fulfillment. It is this same awakened imagination that helps us all see the way forward, even in difficult seasons.
As we all journey to put away childish things in life, let us not discard the inner child. For they are the core of us that is connected to goodness, to wonder, to beauty. They lead us to rest and authenticity. They always ground us back in the truest versions of ourselves. We are more than what we do. We are still, at our core, that little child who, at one time, knew existence to be play, imagination, and expression. Reclaim play and free your inner child!
