How Do You Feel About Change?

Change can sound promising and even romantic, but the reality is - it's usually pretty scary
If you’re like most people, the idea of change – while it sounds promising and maybe even romantic – is usually pretty scary.
We like to tell ourselves that we’re capable of change and open to it, but often when it presents itself, we shy away because it’s too hard, too scary, too expensive, or [insert excuse here].
Sometimes, and really – most of the time – change happens when we’re the least prepared, and it can take our safe, monotonous routine and turn it completely upside down. But you know what?
Sometimes we NEED that to happen in order to move forward. Sometimes we get so stuck in our ways, going about our day-to-day list of things to do without really thinking about what we’re doing. We’re just kind of doing things, like robots, and it can be easy to forget where we’re going.
Change forces us to think about the best way to move forward, and reminds us that we were headed in a particular direction at one point, even if we have lost our way. Whether that direction still makes sense, or we need to change course slightly – change is like a slap in the face, saying, “Wake up!”
It reminds us to act intentionally – with purpose. It reminds us that, in order to grow, we sometimes have to do things that fall outside of our comfort zone.
“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.”
~John D. Rockefeller
During the past year or so, we have all been presented with challenges that were unexpected, unwanted, and uncomfortable in so many ways.
While not everything that triggers change is of this magnitude or severity, the pandemic is certainly a strong example of something that caused many of us to take a deeper look at the way we live our lives.
Many of us were forced to take a step back and reevaluate our priorities and our goals – even if just for the time being – but in many cases, we may have had to adapt in ways that changed our lives forever.
In your personal life and in your professional life, there are going to be things that occur that make you question where you’re going and why you want to go there so badly.
Instead of ignoring the signs that maybe it’s time for a change – no matter how big or small – why not embrace the chance to start over, or shift your direction a bit?
You might just like where you end up even more than where you thought you were going.
Here’s to changing it up every now and then.
