What is wellness? The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition defines wellness as the condition of good physical and mental health, especially when actively maintained by proper diet, exercise, and avoidance of risky behavior. Let’s look at good physical and mental health individually.
Good physical health – this will be different for everybody. For one person it might mean being pain free, for another being able to run a 10K, for another it might mean being able to climb a flight of stairs. Each person gets to choose the level of physical health that meets their needs. Have a good look at where you are now and what needs to improve so you can have good physical health. Do you have to make changes to your diet, add exercise, or make better overall choices?
Good mental health – do you have peace of mind, live in the moment without worrying about the past or having anxiety about the future? Do you have a balanced life of play and work? Having good mental wellness is the key to being truly joyful. Because your thoughts create your feelings and emotions, someone with good, strong mental wellness can think the thoughts that will create positive emotions, which will in turn create positive actions and results.
