Let your momentum work its magic.

Assuming you’re already moving in the direction you want to go, just hanging on is all you need to do.
Oh how sweet it is to be finally outside enjoying the scenic beauty of the pacific northwest. It has been so nice to get out and explore again!
On one of my recent adventures, I biked the Soos Creek and Lake Youngs bike trails that traverse the Kent and Renton, WA areas. The scenic grass lands, forests, and views of Mt. Rainier on these trails did not disappoint.
Okay, maybe my inability to peddle up some of the hills was disappointing, but that’s on me!
As I was peddling along, it struck me how biking is a good analogy for managing a business. Yes, even when surrounded by nature, my mind wonders off to business. What can I say, it’s a passion.
Okay, work with me here!
The Lake Youngs Trail has quite a few patches of loose gravel and potholes. It is very tempting to hit the brakes and swerve to avoid them. Yet over many years of biking, and several wipe-outs, I have learned that just letting momentum (i.e., inertia) do its thing is usually much wiser.
Much like water, your tires follow the path of least resistance. And assuming you’re already moving in the direction you want to go, just hanging on is all you need to do.
Managing a business is similar to biking in the sense that you need to focus your energy on anticipating and navigating around the strategic obstacles (e.g., curves, hills, pets, children, cars) that could completely stop or accelerate your journey.
I know just holding on and doing nothing can seem counter intuitive – especially for my fellow control freaks. Don’t successful business owners have everything under control??
No they don’t.
There’s only so much your knowledge, skills, and network can control. The rest is in many ways luck. Luck that you cross paths with enough people who value and are willing to pay for your entrepreneurial passion. Luck that you live in a safe environment where you can put your authentic self on display.
As long as you’re headed in the direction you want to go, don’t let the many rough patches divert your attention from the strategic choices ahead. Hang on and focus on navigating your path to success! Some might call that realizing Success Beyond Luck!
