Getting started on the journey to self-discovery can seem overwhelming and, at times, impossible; “where do I start?”, “how do I know I’m on the right track?”, “how do I even know if I would benefit from this journey?”. If you’re unsure whether or not you would benefit from self-discovery, answer the following questions for yourself: Do you feel lost? Do you struggle to make seemingly easy decisions? Have you ever felt like you’re stuck in the mud, spinning your wheels, with no idea how to get out?
Let me tell you something; You are not alone.
These limitations stem from fear-based false belief systems; “I’m too old…too young…too inexperienced”, etc. You might be surprised to find out that these feelings are much more common than you may expect. As humans, we are incredibly talented at instilling self-imposed limitations on ourselves.
A false-belief system is a belief system which maintains a negative perspective on your reality. False-belief systems, such as the examples listed above, seep into the tiniest cracks of your self-image. They can accumulate slowly over time, or crash down on you like a 30 foot tidal wave. The time it can take for a false-belief to affect you, and the volume at which it can crash down on you, depend on a myriad of variables and individual life experiences. But, more important than the how of their arrival, is the why.
False-belief systems will penetrate the smallest chink in your armor. Your armor is composed of your own self-image, other people’s view of you, and your life experiences. As you can imagine, as you battle through life and face new challenges, victories, and lessons, your armor can become jaded and worn-down. If you don’t take the time to check in on your armor, repair and nurture it, inevitably it will lose more and more of its protective nature. And, left unchecked for too long, your armor may collapse altogether, leaving you lost and defenseless. Without a strong sense of self, you are subjectable to outside influences and opinions. Without your armor to protect you, the onslaught of the outside world can and will break you down.
By now, you’re probably thinking, “Okay, Cole. Thanks for that chilling visual of being armorless on the battlefield. Now how do I combat those outside influences?”. The answer to this question, is the same answer to most high-level questions we have about life;
IT ALL STARTS WITH SELF.
Of the many building blocks that make up your self-image, there are two main building blocks that are essential; self-discovery and personal understanding. When you know and understand your goals, passions, desires, opportunities, skills, dreams…when you know yourself, everything else falls into place. The journey to self-discovery and personal understanding can be a life-long process, and checking in with yourself regularly is essential to continued growth.
In the interest of providing you with a starting point on your journey to self-discovery, write down just one unachieved dream you have. Now write all of the reasons you’ve told yourself you can’t attain that dream. Take a good, hard look at your list of limitations. How many stem from personal trauma? How many come from a place of lack? How many come from fear?
If you recall, a false-belief system is a belief system which maintains a negative perspective on your reality. Before you can move forward on your path to self-discovery, you must first address and correct those limiting false-beliefs. The more you can understand about where these beliefs originated and why, the clearer your path forward will become. I challenge you to create attainable action items to overcome each one of the limiting reasons you have listed that are keeping you from achieving your dream. Work through each one, sit with the emotions they evoke, and correct the false-beliefs that have been imposed on you.
