The hosts answer a letter from someone who's gotten feedback she should speak up more, even though that goes against her personal communication style.
Our letter writer this week has gotten feedback that she should speak up more, even though that goes against her personal communication style. She’s a quieter, deep thinker and sometimes feels imposter syndrome. She’s also a woman of color working in predominantly white institutions. To answer the question, we bring on a guest host, Ashira Jones, who is an executive coach.
As an introverted, woman of color, Ashira has experienced many of the same challenges. She shares advice from her (super successful) career. Next, we break down three different reasons that someone might not speak up at work. There are (1) times when you don’t have anything to say (2) situations where you need time to think about what to say and (3) instances where you have something to say but are holding back. We then give advice and thoughts on what to do in each instance, which includes everything from how to cater meetings to introverts to quelling your inner critic.
