Change your Mindset: How to take control of life through altering your thoughts
Posted on April 07, 2021 by Tara Fischer, One of Thousands of Life Coaches on Noomii.
We create the reality we experience through the way we think about circumstances which means we can change that reality by changing the way we think.
Maybe you have wondered how some people just seem to have everything together. How their lives seem to flow so seamlessly. How everything just falls into place for them and they appear to be on a lucky streak. They are always in the right place at the right time and whatever comes to them seems to come effortless. They literally seem to attract everything they desire without lifting a finger. Well, it’s not what you think it is. Maybe you have heard the phrase “we create what we imagine” and that is literally what those people do. They have trained their way of thinking so that it helps them manifest their desires. And today I share with you how you too can change your mindset, alter your way of thinking and create a life you love.
Why our thoughts matter?
If you’ve been into personal development and mindset work for some time you might now this, yet I want to clarify for everyone who’s quite new to this. Our thoughts matter because they are the source of everything we do, feel and attract. You might be aware that everything in this universe is connected, so are our mind and our body.
Every second, information enters our consciousness. This information is what you hear, see, feel and experience with your senses. The information that enters your brain is be processed there and either dismissed, stored for later (memory) or acted upon.
The way we process information is by thought, everything we experience triggers a chain of thoughts that send out more information to the cells of our body that then are responsible for generating emotions and actions. Which means if a situation triggers a negative thought this signal will be sent to your nervous system and you will feel sad or angry or whatever emotion relates to this thought. And because you feel this way you might react in that way too creating a result for yourself that you’d rather not created.
That is why thoughts matter and why changing your mindset is so important. By simply altering the way we think we can create a much more present feeling in ourselves as well as take control over the action and reactions we engage in so that they match the desired result.
How your mindset impacts the way you experience life?
Everything in this universe is energy so are your thoughts and your feelings and your actions. We have already covered how they are connected to each other and how if one is negative the others are too. Let’s look at how that affects the reality that you experience.
Imagine you’d think “I can’t do this” every day when you are presented with a challenge (and let trust me, challenges come and go as they please, that’s life), this thought results in you not taking action towards what you want or you are going into ostrich mode instead of dealing with the struggle. Either way you are not getting closer to your goals and most likely make the situation worse. So, your thought has created a reality for yourself that’s not at all like the one you’d like to see. Altering the way, you think however makes all the difference. If you truly believe and think that you can deal with it, then you will most likely do at least something which will in the end move you forward and away from the challenge. Thus, you create a much more pleasant experience around the circumstance, plus, you move close to your dream.
This works, even if you don’t have direct control over what you experience. Let’s say you feel limited by outside circumstance and thus you create a reality for yourself where you feel caged in and unhappy. You might not be physically able to remove that limitation, but you can choose to see it differently and alter the energy that you send out to the universe through the way you think about it. If you can just see the positive in it, be grateful for the opportunities this situation brings to you, you will feel much more content and ultimately send out positive energy which again attracts positive energy back and soon the limitation will no longer be perceived as a limitation anymore resulting in a much more pleasant experience of your reality.
What is mindset work?
Mindset work is a part of personal development, it’s probably the most important part. It refers to everything that includes changing your mindset, working on limiting beliefs, fears and worries. There are multiple tools and techniques one can use to change your mindset. Here are some of them:
- Affirmations: Affirmations are a wonderful tool to help you replace negative with positive or limiting with abundant thoughts. It doesn’t require much time and can be done wherever you are in any situation and the result can be experienced right away through the way you feel. To use affirmations simply become aware of a negative or limiting thought and replace it with the positive and abundant opposite. E.g. your negative thought was “I am going to fail” then your positive affirmation can be “I’ve got this”. Reaffirming this to yourself multiple times a day, before the performance or in the situation the negative thought gets triggered will help you to feel more confident in that moment and also over the long run change the thought that is triggered in that particular situation.
- Visualisation: Imagining yourself doing whatever is necessary to achieve your goals and embodying the feeling you want to have when carrying those actions out can help you greatly to boost confidence and positivity. You can even imagine yourself feeling a certain way e.g. happy, loved, successful. Through creating visual images in our mind using all our senses we create a reality for ourselves that feels real. To the brain, it makes no difference if it is imagined or real, it has the same effect on learning and strengthening neural pathways that are responsible for generating thoughts and emotions.
- Meditation: Focusing on the feeling you want to have, releasing all the negativity and becoming the observer of your thoughts will help you master your mind. It helps you to change your mindset by directing your energy towards more positive thoughts as well as consciously gaining distance from negative thoughts.
- Journaling: The best way to do mindset work is through journaling. Waiting down how you feel, what you think and what that means about yourself and your life. Once you have released all the negative emotions and thoughts you can keep on journaling about how you want to feel, what you want to do and what you will do now to change your mindset and create a life you love.
How to change the way you think?
Changing the way you think is an ongoing process, it’s a practice you have to engage in every day and even throughout the day.
I always recommend my clients to integrate some practices into their morning and evening routine, that way they are already set up for success and happiness that day and for the next. One example could be to wake up repeating positive affirmations and doing some morning journaling and a bit of gratitude journaling in the evening. Another example could be to take 10 minutes to visualize yourself being happy in the morning and going about your day happy and taking a few minutes again in the evening to meditate and be grateful.
And then it is important to practice mindset work throughout the day, which means to be overall present and aware of your thoughts and have practices in place to help you change those thoughts or let them go if they don’t serve you. That can be done through affirmations, meditation, journaling or even exercise or breathing. Once you realize you have a negative thought that currently creates a negative reality for yourself, breath it out. Let it go, bring yourself to a higher vibration through some gratitude and abundance thinking.
Dealing with adversity and changing your mindset for every day happiness
Like mentioned before, life is a constant ebb and flow, there are challenges and adversity coming our way in all sizes and shapes all the time and there is nothing we can do about that. BUT we can choose how we react to those things through choosing the right thoughts. The best way to deal with everyday adversity is to bring in positive thoughts and happy thoughts, thoughts of abundance, love and gratitude. This again takes time and practice but once you can face everything that happens in life with an open, non-judgmental mindset and bring gratitude and appreciation towards the situation and yourself your life will be a lot happier.
