*Heat up your creative process! *
by David Eyman
Every year when the weather turns to these fiery hot days, I notice myself and my friends running to find mercy from an air conditioner. But what are we really running for? Is it really that awful to feel the heat for a few minutes? Or maybe even to forego the notion that it’s all that bad, and enjoy the heat just once?
We do have a choice in the matter. We can run for the air conditioner, cursing weather gods, fearing sweat on our brows, and whining all the way. Or accept that an occasional heat wave is a part of what makes mother earth’s process so magnificent. And it is, so we can learn from her wisdom.
If we choose to resist nature, we get ill will in return, and no good comes of it. If we choose to let go of resistance, we get to smile, enjoy life a little, and trust that the world has its reasons to make the weather, and our creative processes, just the way we are.
Years ago I was out with a friend on a blistering hot day, where the heat’s visible on the pavement underfoot. We got into her black car and closed the doors. She paused. She didn’t move to start the car, just sat there while I was roasting alive! “Good Lord woman, start the car!” I was thinking. But my friend smiled gently and breathed deeply. “Doesn’t this feel great” she said. “Great?” I was thinking. “What the..?” but I went with it. I breathed, and felt the heat touch every cell from my lungs to the pores on my skin. I let go in that moment, and allowed myself to accept and acknowledge the heat. And it did feel good. It felt great even, because I allowed it to.
If we can accept this crazy heat, even for a few minutes, we might accept that fear and anxieties are just a part of our process.
If we let go of resistance, we can act in the face of our fears. We can find a deep love for our own unique creative process, and embrace our anxiety knowing that without it, we’re just not us. :)
